Llyoed Lobo's transformation
In the process of trying to create a massive outcome, most founders abuse themselves.
They sacrifice sleep, skip exercise, and eat whatever is convenient. They have no boundaries. From when they wake up until they sleep, they think about work. They are on the deferred life plan.
We think this is what we "should" do. We are meant to suffer. If we don’t suffer, it means we are falling behind. This is what we tell ourselves. This belief is rooted in fear.
Repeat founder Lloyed Lobo told himself this. As he experienced, you can have tremendous success in your business but be killing yourself in the process.
A limited founder is one who abuses their energy. A limitless founder harnesses and protects energy.
Lloyed has made this transition and transformed every aspect of his life in the process.
In his own words, here is his journey:
A few weeks after the majority sale of the company I co-founded, I landed in the ICU.
Years of eating poorly, bad sleep, chronic stress, and creeping metabolic syndrome finally caught up with me after a tough bout with COVID.
My lungs collapsed. When I finally got out of the hospital, I felt weak and helpless.
I gained 60 pounds in the months that followed. I couldn’t get off the couch. I didn’t recognize my own reflection.
My kids stopped asking me to play because they already knew the answer.
I watched my roles get replaced in my own company. The frustration compounded, and I drove the people closest to me up the wall, acting like my life was over.
Mark MacLeod was one of the first people I spoke to during that time. That conversation had a profound impact on how I thought about life and business. For the first time, I decided to stop pretending to be strong.
I finally let my wife, a physician, take over and help me. She reset my environment, tested every biomarker, brought in specialists, including a trainer, a nutritionist, and a mindset coach, managed my supplements, and tracked my progress.
Here’s what we changed: - Daily prayer and gratitude practice - Heavy strength training 5 days a week - 20 min walk after every meal - Two short HIlT sessions weekly - 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight - 40 grams of fiber - 3 liters of water - Sleep became non-negotiable - 20 min sauna 4-5 days a week
The results: Resting heart rate: from 90s to 55 Body fat: from 30% to 11% Muscle mass: 95th percentile VO2max: from 28 to 54
Building a company isn’t a 100-meter sprint. It’s an ultramarathon through a minefield. If you don’t train to build capacity for the long haul, you’re just one crisis away from collapse.
Your state is your company’s state
As a founder, your state determines your company's state. If you are grounded and energized, you build a calm, high-velocity company. If you are burnt out and frazzled, you build a company in distress.
Lloyed’s story shows what it takes: an identity shift. Recognizing that you are a mental athlete.
Athletes train for peak performance. You don’t need to be in elite shape like Lloyed. But physical health is a prerequisite for the energy and mental clarity that you need. Your job is to make decisions and move fast. You can’t do that if you don’t work on your body and your mind. If you don’t train to be a mental athlete.
